Course Overview

100% Online, Self Paced and United States Coast Guard Approved. Upon completion you may present your course certificate to the U.S. Coast Guard within one year in lieu of Coast Guard examinations. This certificate will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.903(a)(34) for the national endorsement as a Designated Duty Engineer Unlimited HP– Motors.  

A Designated Duty Engineer Unlimited HP – Motors is a critical role within a vessel’s engineering team, responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the ship’s motor propulsion systems and auxiliary equipment. DDEs in this role oversee complex machinery, ensuring that all systems function safely and efficiently. Their responsibilities include conducting in-depth inspections, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, supervising engine room operations, and maintaining detailed logs in compliance with maritime safety standards. This position requires a solid understanding of marine engineering principles and expertise in motor systems and related technical skills.

Course Requirements

A smartphone, tablet or computer is needed to work through the course.

The following is the minimum computer requirements for examination:
  • Desktop or laptop computer (Mac or Windows-based PC).  Chromebooks are also acceptable.
  • Windows PCs require a minimum of Windows 7.
  • Macs require a minimum of macOS 10.10.
  • Minimum Recommended Speeds:
    • Internet  1 Mbps – Download
    • Internet 1 Mbps – Upload
  • Google Chrome web browser, version 74 or higher
  • Web Camera (final exams only)
  • Microphone (final exams only)
Testing Requirements:
  • Safety and Environmental: 50 Questions 70% to pass
  • Generals: 50 Questions 70% to pass
  • Electrical: 50 Questions 70% to pass
  • Motor Propulsion: 50 Questions 70% to pass
All exams are conducted online within the course in partnership with our proctoring provider, SmarterServices.  You will have 3 attempts per exam.
 
Sea Service Requirements:
Applicants must meet the USCG requirements for sea service and endorsement qualifications.  DDE AHP 11.524
